SONANGOL LITERATURE PRIZE

The SONANGOL Literature Prize is a social project that aims to value and highlight Angolan writers. Instituted by SONANGOL with the close collaboration of the Angolan Writers Union (UEA) a dozen years ago, the SONANGOL literature prize aims at encouraging and recognizing the creativity of Angolan writers.
This prize follows Internal Regulations stipulated by SONANGOL and the UEA, allowing writers to participate with previously published or unpublished works.
Since 1999, it has become conferred every two years, and is no longer restricted to Angolan writers, with writers from Cabo Verde and S. Tomé having equal access to the prize.

REGULATIONS:
CHAPTER I
OBJECTIVES OF THE PRIZES

1 – The National Society of Petroleum of Angola, Sonangol-E.P., instituted the "SONANGOL Literature Prize" in the two categories defined below.

2 - "THE GRAND PRIZE", is awarded every two years since the 1999 edition and the "REVELATION PRIZE,” which will maintain its annual intervals of recognition.

3 – The objectives of the respective prizes are the consecration of recognized creativity of the writers from the country where SONANGOL carries out its activities and, in the specific case of Angola, of which the “Revelation” prize is intended to encourage the promotion of literary circles, allowing young writers a more active participation in the search for inroads in the formation of Angola’s new mentality.

CHAPTER II
GRAND PRIZE

4 – The Grand Prize is exclusively intended for established authors from Angola, S. Tomé and Príncipe and Cabo Verde, established authors referring to those who have books already published.

4.1 – The winner is awarded a pecuniary prize of US$ 20,000 (twenty-thousand US dollars), in addition to the cost of publication of the work in 1,500 copies.

CHAPTER III
REVELATION PRIZE

5 – The “Revelation Prize,” as defined above in number 3 of this regulation, is exclusively intended for young Angolan authors, who have yet to publish a work. It will maintain its yearly edition.

5.1 - The winner is awarded a pecuniary prize of US$ 5.000 (five thousand US dollars), in addition to the cost of publication of the work in 1,500 copies.

5.2 – In both of the above cases prizes will be distributed to the best work selected by the jury, in the genres of poetry and prose (fiction, short story collection, novellas, novels or infant-juvenile literature).

CHAPTER IV
ENTRY OF WORKS

6 – Prizes will be awarded and works will be entered in a ceremony on the 25 of February of each month, date on which SONANGOL commemorates its anniversary.

6.1 – In the case of the “Grand Prize,” the release of the work could be made in two acts, the first act taking place in Angola and the second in Cabo Verde or S. Tomé and Príncipe, depending on whether the winner is from one of these other countries.

CHAPTER V
PRESENTATION OF THE WORKS

6 – The works entered in the contest will be assigned a pseudonym and submitted in a closed envelope, in which the complete identification of the author will be contained (name, place and country of birth).

CHAPTER VI
TERMS

8 – The time limit to enter a work for the “Grand Prize” runs from January 1 to July1 of the year in which the prize is awarded.

8.1 – The time limit to enter works for the “Revelation Prize” runs from March 1 to June 15.

CHAPTER VII
REQUIREMENTS OF WORKS

9 – The works must be unpublished.

9.1 – The competing works should be typed double-space on paper formatted A4 and in sets of five copies.

9.2 – The works not awarded a prize will be returned to the authors.

9.3 – The originals will be edited by the Communication and Public Relations Cabinet of SONANGOL and by the UEA, depending on the SONANGOL administration’s decision.

9.4 – The amount to be spent in publishing the editions will be the responsibility of the Communication and Public Relations Cabinet of SONANGOL, pending authorization.

9.5 – The sale price of the works will be the responsibility of the Communication and Public Relations Cabinet of SONANGOL and the UEA.

CHAPTER VIII
WORKS PUBLISHED

10 – Once the work is published, the prize-winning author shall receive 200 copies. The rest will be the sold by the UEA, in the international or national market; receipts will be deposited in an account with SONANGOL.

10.1 – In regards to the above stipulation, an account will be opened in SONANGOL, which will be available to cover other costs associated with the SONANGOL Literature Prize, namely administrative costs.

CHAPTER IX
COMPOSITION OF THE JURY

11 – The Jury, which judges the works and awards the prizes, will have as Secretary a member designated by SONANGOL.

11.1 – The member of SONANGOL will be assigned annually by the CA of the company.

12 – The jury will be composed of the following members:

12.1 – For the "Grand Prize" two (2) writers, members of the UEA, designated by the Directors Committee; one (1) member designated by the Ministry of Education and Culture; two (2) critics designated by the respective association of writers, one representing S. Tomé and Príncipe and the other from Cabo Verde; one (1) member designated by the SONANGOL Administration;

12.2 – For the "Revelation Prize" two (2) writers, members of the UEA designated by the Directors Committee; one (1) member designated by the Ministry of Education and culture; one (1) literary critic designated by the UEA; one (1) member designated by the SONANGOL Administration.

12.3 – The Jury (or Juries, according to the de discretion of the UEA) shall exert its functions for the period of one year; its members should elect a president during the first meeting.

12.4 – Participation in the contests is prohibited to members of the jury.

CHAPTER X
BONUS OF THE JURY

13 – The bonus to be conceded by the Jury will be established each working year, amongst its members and the SONANGOL Administration.

CHAPTER XI
TRAVEL COSTS

14 - SONANGOL will provide the transportation, accommodations and related costs, in order for the members of the Jury to meet abroad, namely in Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.

14.1 - SONANGOL will likewise provide transportation and accommodation payments to the winner of the " SONANGOL Grand Prize (in Literature), who resides in Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe or Angolans living outside of the country.

CHAPTER XII
JURY DECISION

15 – In the case that two works make it to the final in identical circumstances, the Jury will determine who will receive the Prize.

15.1 – The Jury (or Juries) may decide not to award any prize, as long as the quality of the works justifies such a decision, whereupon in the same conditions, they would correspondingly receive honorable mentions.

15.2 – No appeals will be made to the decisions of the Jury.

15.3 – Special cases and doubts as to the interpretation of these Rules and Regulations shall be resolved by the SONANGOL Administration, and heard by the Directors Committee of Angolan Writers Union.
